American Art Helping Students Picture America's History
WASHINGTON, March 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Teachers know that students get excited about history when it is presented to them as a story, and that pictures make stories come alive. While textbooks offer facts about historical figures, pictures and artwork introduce us to real people.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090303/NYFNSJ01 )
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has launched an initiative to give students of all ages and learning styles the opportunity to better understand our country's past, people and its ideals through art. Picturing America (PicturingAmerica.neh.gov) is a new education resource coming to 56,000 K-12 schools and libraries across the nation that tells America's story through forty images of great American art.
Pictures like Washington Crossing the Delaware allow students to enter into the great stories of our history. Seeing Washington lead a boat of patriots into battle for liberty inspires students to develop their own insights into important themes like freedom, leadership and democracy.
Art can inspire otherwise disengaged students. "I used the images in a lesson with fifth graders, where we looked at Bingham's The County Election and Karales' Selma-to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights in 1965," said Cheryl Wolf, a librarian at William McKinley School in New York City. "Some students, who don't ordinarily participate, were clearly drawn into the discussion by the visual element."
Proficient students think in new ways, developing cognitive, social and personal skills, when looking at art. "Through Picturing America, my students are forging a relationship with the history of United States, and are engaged in deep, creative thinking about the identity of our country," said Sara Paulson, a Library Media Specialist at Manhattan's PS 347, the American Sign Language and English School. "Children, many of whom are not even American citizens, are connecting to some of the landmark events of American history through these images in our school."
In addition to students at 56,000 libraries and K-12 schools, pre-elementary school students from economically disadvantaged families will also benefit from this program. All 20,000 Head Start centers across the U.S. are using Picturing America resources to promote early childhood and family learning.
Picturing America's images and resource book are available for everyone online at www.PicturingAmerica.neh.gov.

Artist or Magician? Photographer Makes Age and Weight Disappear in Portraits of Women 40 to 90 Years
Family and friends amazed as women become their photographs
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A famous case study from the 50's tells of a housewife who completely lost her memory in a serious car accident. Prior to the accident she was described as sad, humorless and withdrawn. After losing her memory the positive attention she received as a celebrity gave her a new identity: vibrant, engaging and funny. Essentially, she became who she believed she was.
This "Believe and Become" phenomenon is the backbone of master photographer David Peters' "Truth and Grace" portrait project, which is producing transformational results for his 40- to 90-yr.-old female subjects.
"The Truth and Grace project came out of a need to prove my mature women clients wrong," says Peters. "Too many simply didn't believe they were as attractive as they once were. They had given up on that part of their life. They simply needed hope - and some kind of proof."
Peters now asks his subjects for permission to accept what he sees in them: "I will take them back in time and present them images of the beauty I see still alive inside. Sometimes all it takes is gorgeous light and the perfect angle, but if it takes removing 20 years and 30 pounds through artwork I'll do it."
Professional health coach Isabelle Gagnon is delighted: "The clients that have Truth and Grace sessions are suddenly inspired to actually follow their programs and lose weight. It is terrific motivation!"
At Spa Cielo in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, Cathy Dammann, a renowned skin care and laser therapy specialist, agrees: "Truth and Grace images helped my clients to believe they still deserve to be beautiful. They want to look like their pictures."
Husbands love it, too. Mike Bratton, Nevada City, Calif., says, "If you love your wife you'll want David Peters to photograph her. I was blown away!"
"Delighted disbelief is the most common first response," says Peters, of the women he photographs, "but eventually they do believe and that's when the magic happens and the restoration begins. It's extremely gratifying to be part of their 'miracle.'"
David Peters schedules Truth and Grace fine art portrait sessions across the U.S., Europe and Mexico. For information and scheduling, call 1-800-443-4861.

American Academy of Art Announces Winners of Highly Competitive 2009 Art Scholarship Competition
Prestigious, Chicago-based art school awards scholarships to eight local high school seniors in annual art competition. Awards ceremony being held March 7, 2009.
CHICAGO, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Last November, approximately 175 Chicagoland high school seniors gathered at the American Academy of Art for its annual art scholarship competition. The Academy recently announced the eight winners of the full-day, marathon contest. Prizes include scholarships ranging from two semesters to a half semester to the prestigious, four-year art college. Winners' artwork can be viewed here: www.aaart.edu/images/scholarship-winners.pdf.
Some of the nation's most prolific and notable fine artists and illustrators were trained at the Academy, which is currently celebrating its 86th Anniversary. Most recently, alumnus T. Allen Lawson gained fame for winning a commission from Laura Bush to paint the administration's final holiday card - an enviable commission for any established artist.
The competing students attended the full-day competition on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Their work was judged by Academy faculty, who considered fundamental skills as well as the quality and quantity of work completed via two, three-hour assignments: 1) a figurative drawing from a live model using charcoal and pencil, and 2) a still life work in color using any medium other than oil paint.
"This is always an exciting competition and an excellent way to observe the creative abilities of prospective students," said Mr. Richard Otto, president of the Academy.
The top three scholarships were awarded to:
- Lillian Pecina, a student of Plainfield High School, Plainfield, IL, who received the top award in the form of a two-semester scholarship.
- Daniel Rico, a student at John Hancock High School, Chicago, IL, and Faith Betinis, of Streamwood High School, Streamwood, IL, both of whom received single-semester scholarships.
The remaining five awardees received half-semester scholarships, and they include:
- Nancy Valladares, Harry D. Jacobs High School, Algonquin, IL.
- Gerardo Cazares, John F. Kennedy High School, Chicago, IL
- Jeffrey Stein, Timothy Christian High School, Elmhurst, IL
- Gabrielle Esposito, Lincoln Way East High School, New Lennox, IL
- Oona Goodman, William Henry Harrison High School, Lafayette, IN
The selected awardees will be presented their scholarships during a ceremony at the Academy on March 7. The winning students are expected to attend the Academy fall 2009.
Since its founding in 1923, the American Academy of Art has trained and educated some of the nation's most notable and prolific fine artists and illustrators, including Haddon Sundblom, illustrator of original Coca-Cola Santa Claus; Gil Elvgren, famed for pin-up art during WWII; and most recently noted comic book and graphic novel artists Alex Ross, among dozens of other greats.
The American Academy of Art (www.aaart.edu) offers four-year, accredited Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree programs. It emphasizes the classical tradition, reinforced by real-world projects taught by distinguished instructors - all of whom are working artists as well as full-time teachers. The Academy not only guides and trains students to be exemplary artists, it also connects students to valuable resources to help with their transition to a real-world careers upon graduation.
